Us girls are truly a unique species, aren’t we? God has given us some incredible gifts, but how do we utilize them in the right way? Trust me when I tell you this, girls in media and television today are more than likely NOT the best place for you to find a good example to follow. There are plenty of examples in the Bible of strong and capable woman. Sometimes, it might seem like the Bible is dominated with men and the woman don’t really have a voice. But I know that Jesus holds a special place in his heart for us girls. So, how can we make him pleased and honor him in what we do? These are some important qualities in godly woman and girls in the Bible.
Proverbs 4:24 “Never say anything that isn’t true. Have nothing to do with lies and misleading words.”
It is so absolutely important to be honest. Check out John 14:6- “Jesus answered him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life; no one goes to the Father except by me.” Jesus is the truth, so if speak the truth, then we speak of him! Just by being honest, we are able to share the goodness of Jesus Christ. How cool is that?
John 13:34 “And now I give you a new commandment: love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.”
The truly strong and godly girl has love for all of God’s creation. It’s important to keep in mind that you can’t just love your friends or family, but ALL creation, even the seemingly unlovable. That girls that sits alone at lunch everyday? You know that your friends might look at you strange for it, but go sit with her! By doing this, you are pleasing God and sharing his love with others.
Ephesians 4:32 “Be kind and tender-hearted to one another, and forgive one another, as God has forgiven you through Christ.”
Let’s think about this. Has there ever been a time that your brother or sister invaded your privacy? Lets say that your sister read you diary. What a snoopy little pest! Now lets say you shouted that at her. Is that okay? You might think, “She deserved it, she was the one who did wrong!” But God tells us that we need to forgive each other, even when it is difficult. Remember that God forgave us for every single one of our sins through Jesus Christ!
Proverbs 22:9 “Be generous and share your food with the poor. You will be blessed for it.”
If you are reading this blog, you have a computer or phone. You are very blessed to be able to have that. There are so many people in the world that aren’t even lucky enough to have food in their stomachs. Whenever the Lord presents you with an opportunity, share your blessings with others in need. Remember that being selfish and greedy are part of your human nature, and God calls you away from them. Galatians 5:17 tells us, “For what our human nature wants is opposed to what the Spirit wants, and what the Spirit wants is opposed to what our human nature wants. These two are enemies, and this means that you cannot do what you want to do.”
Ephesians 5:21 “Submit yourselves to one another because of your reverence for Christ.”
Now this one may not seem right, because of all the “Girl Power” and “Woman dominate!” flying at us in today’s society, but the Bible calls woman to be meek and submissive. Now, be careful with this one. This doesn’t mean that you have to be spineless or completely compliant to something you don’t feel comfortable with. This only means that you are respectful to others, whether it be your parents, siblings, even those that you don’t particularly feel like respecting. Meekness isn’t weakness, rather the strength to be able to rise to God’s standards and treat others as he calls us to.
Proverbs 31:25 “She is strong and respected and not afraid of the future.”
Life throws a lot at us. But the truly strong girl will know that she can handle anything with God’s strength. When your world seems like it is crumbling, remember that your God will never leave you. Philippians 4:13 says, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Christ wraps his arms around those who turn to him. Remember, Jesus went through incomprehensible pain for you. He brought you here, he wouldn’t leave you now!
Cautious with Words
Proverbs 15:28 “The godly think before speaking; the wicked spout evil words.”
As a girl, I know that most of us tend to have an incredible capacity for words. When I’m with my friends, the conversation moves so quickly with one word right after another! I don’t believe that this quality in females is by accident, but we need to be careful with how we use this gift. Words can seriously hurt others, whether to their face or behind their back. Pray to God that he will filter your words, so that only the pure and uplifting ones will come out. Ephesians 4:29 “Do not use harmful words, but only helpful words, the kind that build up and provide what is needed, so that what you say will do good to those who hear you.”
Proverbs 9:1 “Wisdom has built her house and made seven columns for it.”
Being wise isn’t just about knowing rules, but actually putting them into practice. God will be pleased with us if we go out into the world and obey his commandments. Wise girls prepare themselves for a lifelong relationship with Jesus. Proverbs 31:26 talks about a capable woman, saying “She speaks with a gentle wisdom.” If you don’t know what the wise thing to do is, check the ultimate rulebook; the Bible!
Proverbs 31:17-18 “She is a strong worker, hard and industrious. She knows the value of everything she makes, and works late into the night.”
You can’t get anything without working hard for it. As girls especially, the world poses several struggles to get what you need. But don’t get too caught up in what the world thinks about females, rather what God thinks about you. Now, I’m not talking about doing a certain number of deeds to gain God’s approval, because that’s not how He works. Galatians 3:28 tells us, “So there is no difference between Jews and Gentiles, between slaves and free people, between men and women; you are all one in union with Christ Jesus.” It is through Christ we are saved. Now, we must honor that Good News in all we do. That’s a really big task, but through STRENGTH(see how these qualities connect?) we can do it!
Proverbs 31:30 “Charm is deceptive and beauty disappears, but a woman who honors the Lord should be praised.”
The most important thing for a godly girl(or godly woman) to be is, of course, honoring the Lord! This is our biggest task as Christians. We must praise and respect the Lord in all that we do. If there is any part of your life that doesn’t honor the Lord, work on changing it, or if necessary, cutting it out of your life. Make it your mission to please God and bringing glory to His name in you life.
These all may seem impossible to you, but don’t panic! Jesus is with you every step of the way, and he wants to see you succeed. He loves us so much that he would never leave us alone. I’ll pray for you, and you pray for me. It’s a difficult journey to grow up in this world as a godly girl, but we can do it through His strength!
